16 Jun 05       Opa Locka, Heart of Georgia, Lexington                  Day 1 - OPF to EZM; EZM to 44I; 44I to LEX

We had a great send-off party at Opa Locka Airport today. Thanks to our families, friends, and sponsors for making this wonderful adventure possible.

Our flight up to our first stop, the Heart of Georgia Airport (EZM), was great. The weather was terrific and so was the flight up, even though we had strong headwinds and it took us almost 4 hours to get there. Once we landed, we fueled the airplane and then the local FBO lent us a van and we went to town to eat lunch at the Huddle House.

Our second stop was Dale Hollow, Kentucky (44I) - the flight from Georgia to Kentucky was simply beautiful and it took us 3 hours. Our route took us through the Georgia and Tennessee mountains and we had beautiful scenery all the way. Landing at Dale Hollow was very interesting. The airport is a private fly-in community but they allow public use, with a small and narrow runway. It is located at the top of a hill with a beautiful river running through at the south end of the field and trees all around. However, they did not have any aviation fuel (AOPA book said they did). We did see a gas pump but it was for car fuel, although it was located right off the runway (Go figure!). We then decided to go on to Lexington, Kentucky - Blue Grass Airport (LEX), which was another hour of flight but it is a bigger regional airport. We decided to call it a night since we were both tired. The people at the TAC-AIR FBO, were very friendly and helpful and gave us the hotels information and made arrangements for transportation to the Hilton. Friday morning we depart to Lafayette.
